The Inside Story
It all started when they were teenagers in the 60’s...
Guitarists Jeff Freedman and Mark Zipkin first met as teenagers while growing up in the Overbrook Park section of Philadelphia. Like many of their peers, they were mesmerized and inspired by the music of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and others of the British Invasion. Eventually their enthusiasm for the same music brought them together, playing in area bands with names like Slurppy & The Purple Moos, The Loose Connection, Psyche Session, and Black Castle. They culminated their teenage years together playing the Lower Merion High School Junior Prom.
Finding themselves together once again at Penn State University, Freedman and Zipkin became roommates and, naturally, played their guitars more than ever. It wasn't long before they connected with drummer Charlie Franklin of Audubon, PA, who had devoted many of his teenage years to playing in bands in the Pittsburgh area. The three joined forces to form Fat Chance, and playing their brand of high energy rock music at local State College venues.
Once in the working world, the three musicians were forced to move their musical ambitions to the back burner while pursuing careers in teaching, computer programming, and technology sales. Although they continued to play with others, they were less than completely satisfied. But as of Thanksgiving 2011, the three reconnected and re-formed their college band as Big Baby, a new outlet for their continuing musical expression.
“It’s a lot more fun now!” says Zipkin. “Charlie has discovered his talent for singing and that's been a real game-changer for us. Besides the fact that he's a fine singer on his own, we can now do vocal harmony we'd never have attempted or imagined in the past".
The very latest development is that Rob Zipkin has joined as the 4th member of Big Baby, greatly expanding the band's sound and capabilities with his keyboard and vocal talents along with his passion for progressive rock. The band is delighted that Rob is able to help broaden its repertoire with keyboard-oriented songs and with so many note-for-note solos and other passages from the original recordings. Thanks to Rob and his keyboards, the band can now draw upon a vast array of instrumental, synthesized and even orchestral sounds. And this is still just the beginning of the evolution we'll be seeing thanks to Rob, so please continue to stay tuned!
Big Baby is still playing the music they grew up with and so much more. And they are loving it more than ever! They've recently appeared at area venues such as the Rusty Nail, The Irish Times, The Mermaid Inn, The Cynwyd Station Cafe, The Skyview Lounge, 30 Main Berwyn, Chickie's & Pete's Sports Bar, and others – as energized and inspired as ever. They would be delighted to perform at your next party, affair or business function, so please visit the contact section of the website as applicable.
